In November 1995, Yoshi Hashimoto documented the final days of the Lexington Hotel, historic landmark and former home to Al Capone. He was given exclusive photographic access to the interior of the building and continued shooting up until the day before demolition began. Twleve photographs from this series are in The Art Institute of Chicago's Ryerson and Burnham collection. The Lexington was built as one of Chicago's first high-rise luxury hotels to house dignitaries during the World's Colombian Exposition in 1893. One of the first guests was President Grover Cleveland. Over the years the nature of the neighborhood shifted and the Lexington changed from luxury hotel to traveling businessmen's hotel to single-room occupancy hotel. The hotel's most notorious resident, gangster Al Capone, lived and worked in a series of suites on the fourth and fifth floors from 1928 until he was convicted of tax evasion in 1932. In the 1950's the hotel's neighborhood became home to several recording studios including Chess and VeeJay Records with much of their business conducted in Batt's Deli on the hotel's ground floor. In the final decades the hotel steadily deteriorated into a flophouse until it was declared unsafe for occupancy and closed in 1980. In 1986 a nationally broadcasted television special "The Mystery of Al Capone's Vault" was hosted by Geraldo Rivera. He was unable to discover anything in the vaults but fired a submachine gun into the walls of the second floor gymnasium where Capone's bodyguards used to work out. The Chicago architectural firm, Bauer Latoza Studio, who was retained by the City of Chicago to document the building through drawings before demolition was unable to uncover any hidden tunnels or staircases long rumored to have been used by Capone to escape detection by police and rival bootleggers. Architectural historian, Tim Samuelson of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks concurs that no such escape routes ever existed.
